The Holy Spirit Vs Evil Spirits
Many people have mistaken ideas about the Holy Spirit. As God’s TRUE children, we must carefully consider what God tells us in His Book. The devil and his helpers are always on the prowl trying to get people away from Christ.
Ephes. 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: (KJV) . . . The course of this world = this age, (Gal.1:4), or the present system of this world (1 Cor. 2:6, 12; 1 Cor.3:18-19), as opposed to the world to come. This present age is alien from God, and under control of the wicked one (1 John 5:19). The prince of the power of the air is the unseen ungodly power who guides the course of this world (2 Cor. 4:4). We should consider the comparison of the fowls of the air (Mark 4:4) and Satan and his demons (Eph. 6:12; John 12:31). Satan assults those on Earth with trials and temptations. We live in an atmosphere filled with poisonous and deadly elements. Purification of the air will take place only with Christ's coming. Only then shall Satan shall be bound (Rev. 12:12-13, 15, 17; Rev. 20:2-3). The power of the air which works still now is Satan and his evil spirits. The power of the air is the embodiment of that evil "spirit" which rules unbelievers, especially the heathen (Acts 26:18), opposite to the Spirit ruling the children of God. The power of those evil spirits is clearly shown in the "disobedience" of unbelievers. They disobey the Gospel both in faith and practice.
1 Tim. 4:1-2 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; (KJV) . . . The “later times” began with Christ’s resurrection and will continue until His return when He will set up His kingdom and judge all humanity. False teachers were then, and still are a great threat to the church. Jesus and the apostles repeatedly warned against them (Mark 13:21-23; Acts 20:28-31; 2 Thes. 2:1-12; 2 Peter 3:3-7). It is not enough that a teacher seems to know what he/she is talking about, is disciplined and moral, or says that he/she is speaking for God. If their words contradict the Bible in ANY way, their teaching is false. We must guard against any teaching that causes believers to dilute or reject any aspect of their faith. Such false teaching can be very direct or extremely subtle. Seducing spirits are all around us. Doctrines of devils are welcomed in today’s world. BEWARE!!!
2 Tim. 3:1-5 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. (KJV) . . . The last days began after Jesus’ resurrection when the Holy Spirit came upon the believers at Pentecost. The “last days” will continue until Christ’s Second Coming. This means that we are living in the last days. So we should make the most of the time that God has given us (Ephes. 5:16; Col. 4:5). Paul’s descriptive list of behavior in the last days describes our society today; and unfortunately, the behavior of many Christians. Check your life against Paul’s list. Don’t give in to society’s pressures. Don’t settle for comfort without commitment. Stand up against evil by living as God would have His people live. Don’t fall for the wiles of the devil and his cohorts.
2 Tim. 4:3-4 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. (KJV) . . . People today turn away from the Truth, they want no part of the Lord or His Gospel. They want no part of the Truth. People will not endure preaching which tells them they are sinners and if they don’t change, Hell awaits. Isaiah had a problem too!
Isaiah 30:10 Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits: (KJV)
2 Peter 3:17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. (KJV) . . . Always be on guard, so that you will not be led away by the errors of godless people ruled by evil spirits, and fall from your position in Christ.
Col. 2:18 Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, (KJV) False teachers have a false humility. True humility means we see ourselves as we really are, (from God’s viewpoint), and act accordingly. People practice false humility when they talk pessimistically about themselves so that others will think they are spiritual. False humility is self-centered; true humility is God-centered. Some false teachers claim that God is so far away that He can only be approached by angels. They teach that people must worship angels in order to reach God. This is NOT what the Bible teaches! Angels are God’s servants, and the Bible forbids us from worshiping them (Ex.20:3-4; Rev. 22:8-9). Let God’s Word be your guide, not opinions of other people. The expression fleshly mind (unspiritual mind) means people had a self-made religion.
Objects of Worship
It is the nature of mankind to worship something. There are literally hundreds of forms of worship. The Bible clearly tells us what NOT to worship: angels, devils, idols of any kind, shape or form, etc. It teaches us that we are to worship God alone through Christ Jesus with the help of the Holy Spirit. Do NOT listen to evil spirits.
Rev. 9:20-21 And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts. (KJV) . . . The people who do not die in the plagues at this time, still refuse to turn from their evil ways. They continued to worship demons and idols made of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood . . . idols that neither see nor hear nor walk! And they did not repent of their murders or their witchcraft or their immorality or their thefts.
Isaiah 46:6 They lavish gold out of the bag, and weigh silver in the balance, and hire a goldsmith; and he maketh it a god: they fall down, yea, they worship. (KJV) . . . Some people in Isaiah's time, would hire a craftsman to make a "god" from gold and silver. Then they bow down and worship it!
Jeremiah 10:2-5 Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good. (KJV) . . . People are so foolish. They cut down a tree and make an idol of it. They decorate this worthless god with gold and silver and then fasten it securely with hammer and nails so it won't fall over. It can’t speak, and it needs to be carried because it can’t walk. This could also refer to a “Christmas” tree.
God made the Earth and the heavens, including stars that people consult and worship (Jer.10:12). NO ONE will discover the future in charts of God’s stars. But God, who promises to guide you, knows your future and will be with you all the way. He may not reveal your future to you, but He will walk with you as the future unfolds. Don’t trust the stars; trust the One who made the stars.
Romans 1:22-23 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. (KJV) . . . WHY do intelligent people turn to idolatry? Idolatry starts when people reject what they know about God. Instead of looking to Him as the Creator and Sustainer of life, they see themselves as the center of everything. They invent “gods” that are convenient projections of their own selfish plans and desires. These gods can be anything other than the true living Creator God of the Bible: wooden, metal or any type of figures, but gods can also be goals or things we pursue such as money, power, possessions, pleasure or comfort, stars or angels, etc. They can also be misrepresentations of God Himself . . . making God in our image, instead of the reverse. Idolaters worship things God made rather than God Himself. Is there anything you feel you can’t live without? Then it is a god to you. Do you place something, anything before God? Then that is your god. Do you have a dream of fortune or fame, that you would sacrifice everything to realize? Does God take first place? Do you worship God or do you worship idols? Don’t let Satan and his evil spirits take the place of the Holy Spirit in your life!
Ezekiel 14:3-4 Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be enquired of at all by them? Therefore speak unto them, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Every man of the house of Israel that setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to the prophet; I the Lord will answer him that cometh according to the multitude of his idols; (KJV) . . . On the outside, many people SEEM to worship God. They go to church regularly, but they are not sincere. They are hypocrites! People have idols in their heart. Everything starts in the heart! God considers the heart as the core of a person. Because ALL people have someone or something as the object of their heart’s devotion, they have the potential for idolatry within them. God wants the hearts of His people. We must never let anything charm or lure our loyalty in any way to replace or weaken our devotion to God.
Signs of Work of Seducing Spirits
Many “spirits” are at work in this world today. There are supernatural powers everywhere! Beware! Fortune tellers, sorcerers, wizards, necromancers, diviners, all forms of the occult. Necromancer = to tread or frequent, to follow, to pursue or search, by implication to seek or ask of the dead.
Deut. 18:9-14 When thou art come into the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee. Thou shalt be perfect with the Lord thy God. For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the Lord thy God hath not suffered thee so to do. (KJV) . . . All calculation of lucky or unlucky days, all charms for diseases, all amulets or spells to prevent evil, ALL fortune-telling, is forbidden here. These ALL are so wicked in the eyes of God. They are an ABOMINATION to Him! ALL fortune tellers are absolute impostors who blind and cheat their followers. Only God knows the future!
Leviticus 19:31 Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God. (KJV) You are NOT to rely on mediums and psychics, for you will be defiled by them. Do NOT mess with them! God will set His Face against that soul that goes a whoring after evil spirits (Lev.20:6). . . . Only God knows the future!
2 Kings 17:17 And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger. (KJV) . . . Divination means witchcraft, and sorcery is consulting or getting advice from evil spirits. Forms of witchcraft, fortune-telling, and black magic were forbidden by God (Deut. 18:9-14), and since God does NOT change, they are forbidden today too! They were and are wrong because people seek power and guidance completely apart from God, His law, and His Word. Isaiah repeated this law and told of the complete destruction these occult practices would bring to those who participated in them (Isaiah 8:19-22).
Isaiah 8:19 And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead? (KJV) . . . WHY do people try to find out the future by consulting witches, mediums and psychics who are consulting evil spirits? WHY do they listen to the evil spirits as they whisper and mutter? Can people find out the future from the dead? NO way! The wise thing to do is accept the leading of the Holy Spirit! He will give you all the wisdom, strength and guidance that you need to live your life. Trust God alone!
Rev. 9:21 Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts. (KJV) . . . People during the Great Tribulation will be so hardhearted that even plagues will not drive them to God. People don’t usually fall into immorality and evil all at once; they slip into it bit by bit, that they become hopelessly bogged down in their wicked ways. If you allow sin to take root your life can find yourself in this predicament. If you give in to temptation today, it becomes sin tomorrow, then a horrible habit the next day, finally leading to death and separation from God forever (James 1:15). Don’t think it couldn’t happen to you. It can! Acknowledge your sin, and confess it before God (1 John 1:9). Satan and his evil spirits are a never ceasing, dangerous bunch. Beware!
Rev. 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. (KJV) . . . The fearful are not those who sometimes doubt or question, but those who turn back completely from following God. They don’t have enough courage to stand up for Christ; and they have too much pride to accept His authority over their lives. These people are put in the same list as the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the liars, the idolaters, the sexually immoral, and those practicing witchcraft and the occult.
God’s TRUE people overcome "endure unto the end" (Mark 13:13).
Only they will receive the blessings that God has promised:
- (1) eating from the tree of life (Rev. 2:7),
- (2) escaping from the lake of fire (the “second death,” Rev. 2:11),
- (3) receiving a special name (Rev. 2:17),
- (4) having authority over the nations (Rev. 2:26),
- (5) being included in the book of life (Rev. 3:5),
- (6) being a pillar in God’s spiritual temple (Rev. 3:12), and
- (7) sitting with Christ on his throne (Rev. 3:21). Only those who can endure the testing of evil spirits and remain faithful will be rewarded by God.
2 Peter 2:13-14 And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count it pleasure to riot in the daytime. Spots they are and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you; Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children: (KJV) . . . Peter is speaking of false teachers. These people were and are guilty of more than false teaching and promoting evil pleasures; they were and are guilty of leading others away from God’s Son, Jesus. They are led NOT by the Holy Spirit as so many claim . . . but by evil spitits! They are impure seducers and they and their followers, give themselves over to their own evil fleshly minds. Their thoughts are never to the obedience of Christ, they act against God’s righteous and moral rules. They walk after the flesh, NOT after the Holy Spirit’s leading, they go down sinful roads, increasing moral corruption and wickedness with each step. They despise God’s TRUE servants. Outward temporary good things are the wages these sinners expect and promise themselves. They should tremble at the reward of unrighteousness that awaits, but they don’t seem to consider it. They just boldly gratify their sinful lusts, by counting on the Divine grace and mercy of God, never thinking how He cannot tolerate sin of any kind. They speak lightly of God’s law, and certainly do not obey it. We as TRUE Christians must rely completely on the Holy Spirit and stay far away from these people who rely on evil spirits.
What Does The Bible Tell Us?
For anyone who wants to know the Truth, God tells us in His Word. IF we seek, we shall find! IF we hunger for righteousness, we shall be filled!
Matthew 5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. (KJV) . . . Jesus' Words.
Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. (KJV) . . . Jesus' Words.IF we seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, everything we need in life shall be given to us!
Matthew 7:7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: (KJV) . . . Jesus' Words.
God also clearly tells us to be on the lookout for false Christs, false prophets and false teachers. He warns us not to fall for evil spirits.
Matthew 24:4-5 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. (KJV) . . . Jesus' Words. When we look for signs, we become very susceptible to being deceived. There are many “false prophets” around with counterfeit signs of spiritual power and authority. To keep from being deceived, we must focus on Christ and His Words. Don’t look for special signs, or take for granted that signs are from God! and don’t spend time looking at other people. Look at Christ.
Do NOT Look For Signs!
John 4:48 Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe. (KJV) . . . Jesus' Words.
Matthew 12:39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: (KJV) . . . Jesus' Words.
Matthew 16:4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed. (KJV) . . . Jesus' Words.Today there are many so-called signs that people flock to, and believe that they are from God. According to these verses, the signs of today are from evil spirits. Don’t flock to them, or believe this nonsense. Believe what God says in His Book. Many are the evil spirits in the world today. BEWARE!!!
Matthew 24:11-13 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. (KJV) . . . Jesus' Words.Jesus tells you NOT let anyone mislead you. He knew many would come in His Name and lead many astray.
Matthew 24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew greatsigns and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. (KJV) . . . Jesus' Words.Do NOT be deceived by false messiahs. Jesus’ return will be unmistakable (Mark 13:26); NO one will doubt that it is He. If someone tells you that Jesus has come, then He hasn’t (Mat.24:27), it is only some nut trying to bring glory to himself. Christ’s coming will be obvious to everyone. Do NOT fall for the falsehoods of evil spirits, no matter how good they sound or seem. Check it out with the Bible. BEWARE!!! Satan wants you to believe that God is a liar. God is NOT a liar!
