WHAT Is God’s Wrath?

God’s anger and human anger are NOT the same! There are many differences.

#1. Human anger can often lead to actions that can range from minor to explosive. It can be provoked or unprovoked. Waking up on the wrong side of the bed, is one well known phrase, meaning we lash out at anyone who steps in our path. God NEVER wakes up on the wrong side of the bed!

#2. Man’s wrath is usually brought on by being wronged or misunderstood, and is motivated by selfishness and tries to hurt, punish or destroy people.
James 1:19-20 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: 20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. (KJV)
God’s wrath is righteous anger, revealed from Heaven on sin.
Isaiah 59:2-4 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. 3 For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness. 4 None calleth for justice, nor any pleadeth for truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity. (KJV)

#3. People get angry at times for the most stupid reasons, and fly into a rage or hit the ceiling for no reason at all. Proverbs 14:17 He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly: and a man of wicked devices is hated. (KJV)
God’s righteous wrath is a response to the evil and sin in this world. God’s wrath rises out of His reaction to wicked acts that have corrupted human souls and the very world in which we live.

#4. Man’s anger seems to sky rocket all our inward affections. Wrath is the boiling up of our passions, and anger a desire for revenge. Eph. 4:31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: (KJV)
A Holy God sees that sin perverts the Creation which He loves. As our Creator who loves truth, justice and peace, His wrath intervenes to prevent the corruption from wiping out all the inhabitants of the Earth.  Matthew 24:22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened. (KJV)

God’s wrath attacks sin, seeking to destroy the disease that has rotted humans from the inside out (Gen. 6). We must keep in mind God does not immediately pour out His wrath upon Creation. The Bible describes him as slow to anger (Ps.103:8). He gives people time to repent and turn away from the sin that has caused them to turn away from Him (Jonah 3).
It is rare to talk about God’s wrath in church. Whenever someone brings it up, someone will change the subject to talk about a better subject, such as God’s love. The idea that God’s wrath and God’s love are tied together does not seem to harmonize. Even though we may not understand God’s wrath, without it, we cannot have God’s love.

Where Do Wrath and Love Intersect? Where do wrath and love meet? Both love and wrath are connected. God loves us, but God hates sin. Because God is holy and pure, whenever we sin, we have defiled ourselves and cannot be in the Presence of a Holy God. The shock of even brushing against a holy God, sinful as we are, would simply kill us. 2 Sam. 6:7 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God. (KJV)

God wants to live in fellowship with us, but sin has created a gap between Himself and us. Seeing this gap, God sought to bridge it. He unleashed His wrath, the outpouring of His righteous anger in response to the sin of man, on Jesus on the cross. Jesus chose to suffer the wrath for us to pay the penalty for our sin. In doing so, He has paid for the debt our sin has caused and allows us to dwell in the Presence of God . . . IF we choose to accept His awesome gift.

Really, what it all boils down to is that there are only two kinds of people: (1). the ones who say to God, Thy will be done, and (2). those to whom God says, thy will be done. Dear one, all those who are in Hell, chose to be there! To those who seek find, to those who knock, it is opened (Mat.7:7). God’s wrath and God’s love intersect at the cross of Calvary. Even though we have attained a great debt, our loving Redeemer chose to bear it for us, so we can avoid a fiery fate our sin has created for us.

Why Does God’s Wrath Matter? It matters that Christians talk about God’s wrath. We actually cheapen and ridicule God’s love if we don’t show what fate He has spared us from by dying for our sins and allowing us to come into eternity with Him. By talking about God’s wrath, we understand how serious our sins are. We realize just how much God had to do to return sinners home. We can better understand God’s love, and can love Him all the more for it when we understand God's wrath!
