The Population of the Pre-Flood World

Genesis 6:1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, (KJV)
Because men were living long lives, the population of the Earth grew rapidly (Gen.9:1). At the time of Flood there most likely were a great number of people on the Earth, probably millions. There have been many formulas for calculating the population of the Pre-Flood world, but my friend, all are just guesses, but they do allow us to see what the possibilities were. I think that we can conclude there probably were conservatively millions of people on Earth. I will not go into this, it is too deep for me. If you want info, you can see the following sites:

The Sons of God, Daughters of Man Controversies

Genesis 6:2-4 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. 3  And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. 4  There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. (KJV)

Genesis 6:2-4, has been a much debated Passage of Scripture. Just WHO were the sons of God, that took wives of the daughters of men? The question of the mention of sons of God in Gen. 6 has always provoked much disagreement. Did angels really live with humans? Did they really have sex with them? Or were these sons of God, the godly descendants of Seth that took women from the ungodly line of Cain?

2 Peter 2:4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; (KJV) . . . Peter did not say in what way these angels were wicked. Jude says that they "kept not their first estate" (Jude 6). Revelation 12:7-9 says "neither was their place found any more in heaven". I think these are the angels who chose to go with Lucifer when he opposed God (Eze.28:11-19; Isa.14:12-15; Rev. 12:7-12; 20:1-10). Some believe that Genesis 6:1-3 says that they (angels) "took them wives" of humans. I cannot go along with this.

Jude 1:6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. (KJV)  . . . Because of their pride, some angels refused to obey God (Rev.12:7-9). Those angels did not ‘keep’ their proper position. So God ‘kept’ (is keeping) them in chains and in darkness until the day of judgment (2 Pet. 2:4). Since God judges even angels, He will most certainly judge us too.
God created angels with a free will. Angels do NOT reproduce as human do; so, they do not inherit a sinful nature as we do. But, each angel is created by God with a free will. Some of these spiritual creatures were caught up in a rebellion, and chose to follow Satan, now they are reserved in chains.

2 Peter 2:4, and Jude 6 are clearly references to the fall of Satan and the angels that followed him . . . BUT . . . these two New Testament Passages are NOT a reference to the events of Genesis 6:2-4, because the Fall of Satan and the rebellious angels happened possibly thousands of years earlier. The events in Genesis 6 have absolutely NO connection with, or bearing on, those events recorded in 2 Peter 2:4 and Jude 6.

It seems the fallen angels are divided into two groups. The group whose rebellion was extremely great, are the ones evidently locked up, with no freedom any more. The other group of fallen angels apparently has freedom of movement and is under the leadership of Satan. Demons are very active in the world today, and these have to be the second group, for the first group are in chains! (Mat.4:24; Mat.8:16; 9:33; 15:28; 17:18; Mark 1:26,34; 5:13; 7:30; 9:26). It seems evident that there are demons mentioned in Scripture and that are prominent in our day.

We must admit that humanity is depraved. None of us seems to realize fully that we belong to a race that is totally depraved and that we live in a world that is under the control of Satan.

The Bible that tells us about the angels which rebelled against God and about those whom "he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day." The Word of God has a great deal to say about the judgments that are coming. People without a knowledge of the Bible speak of ONE great judgment day which is coming. The Great White Throne judgment is coming in the future for the unsaved (Rev. 20:11-15), but actually there are several judgments mentioned in the Word of God. One of those judgments is the judgment of angels, which will take place during the last days.

For the Great White Throne judgment, see: . . . Judgment Coming.

Many people have decided that the sons of God were angels who cohabited with women on Earth. They use 2 Peter 2:4 and Jude 6 (above) to support their idea that angels were the sons of God whom by this act fell into sin and were condemned by God. They further conclude that the giants of Genesis 6:4 were their offspring. I simply CANNOT go along with this, for several reasons:

#1. Good angels would NEVER commit this sin.
#2. Evil angels (demons) would not be called the sons of God.
#3. Angels are spirit beings. They are one of God’s Creations, as is mankind. The two creations are different.
#4. Jesus tells us that angels do not have conjugal union nor reproduction. Matthew 22:30 For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven. (KJV) Mark 12:25 For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven. (KJV)  . . . Jesus' words.
#5. Knowing that God is NOT the Author of confusion (1 Cor.14:33), it makes no sense whatsoever that angels would have desired to take human wives.
#6. Also, since angels are spirit beings, having no body, they could NOT produce children.
#7. The Bible does NOT say that this undocumented union, produced the giants in Gen.6:4. It simply states that there were giants on earth at the time of the Flood.

Genesis 6:4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. (KJV) . . . Some people think incorrectly that the sons of God were fallen angels, noting that the phrase sons of God is in many places used wholly of angels. But, the phrase also can simply mean the creation of God. In the New Testament the phrase refers to saved born again believers and there it means a relationship with God.

Some also state that we do not know if angels can produce offspring or not. That totally ignores our Lord Jesus Christ in Matthew 22:30 and Mark 12:25 which disproves this false idea. Every reference to angels in the Bible presents them as sexless spirit beings. Fallen angels are NOT called the sons of God, they became demons and demons possess human beings, they do NOT marry humans or have sexual relations with humans.

Genesis 6:4 is actually three statements. #1. There were giants in the earth. #2. And also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them. #3. The same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown . . . their offspring was mighty men of renown.

This does NOT say the offspring of the sons of God and daughters of men were giants. One commentator says he does not believe, that their offspring were huge monstrosities, but instead men of outstanding ability. Some translate the word giant as Nephilim. Nephilim can be translated, be wonderful, strong, powerful and mighty. It may mean heroes or fierce warriors. Nephilim may refer possibly to a nation or race of people. From the evidence, it is not proper to suggest the word refers to a race of superhuman monstrosities or giants. The word mighty refers to their abilities, not to their size or outward appearance. Below is what I have on giants in the Bible, NONE of which state they were offspring of angels:

Giants, or Rephaim; abnormally tall and powerful human beings of ancient times: (Gen.6:4; 14:5; Num.13:33; Deut.2:11,20; 3:1; 9:2; Josh.12:4; 13:12; 17:15; 18:16; 1 Sam.17;4; 2 Sam.21:16,20; 1 Chron.11:23; 20:4; Amos 2:9)

Giants, Anakim: (Num.13:22,28,33; Dut.1:28; 2:10,21; 9:2; Josh.11:21; 14:12.15; 15:14; Judg.1:20)

Giants, Emim: (Gen.14:5; Deut.2:11)

Giants, Goliath, a giant slain by David:
(1 Sam.17:4,23; 21:9; 1 Chron.20:5)

I believe that the correct understanding of Genesis 6:4 is that the sons of God were the descendants of Seth. It is through the lineage of Seth, that God chose to bring the Lord Jesus the Messiah (Lk.3:38), and therefore the phrase sons of God fits. I believe that the daughters of men were the offspring of Cain. Cain's offspring are here called daughters of men, because Cain rebelled against God and produced descendants of unbelieving and sinful men. It seems logical to me that this Passage is explaining that the whole of the Earth became corrupted and that God destroyed them. Seth's descendants, even though in the godly line of the Lord Jesus, sinned by intermarrying with the ungodly line of unbelievers that Cain produced (2 Cor.6:14-18). Believers and unbelievers should NOT marry, should NOT be yoked together.
See: http://www.godcannotlie.org/2_cor_ch.6.html

At the time of the Flood, only eight descendants of Seth remained true to God, that being Noah and His family. None of Cain's descendants survived the Flood. This shows that because Seth's lineage sinned they too perished with the descendants of Cain. This is a logical interpretation and in keeping with the subject and context of this Passage and the other Scriptures which have a bearing on this matter.

Genesis 6:4 states there were also giants in the land at that time. These too, according to God, were wicked men. The term giants in Hebrew implies not so much the idea of men of great stature, but those of reckless ferocity, ungodly and daring characters, who spread devastation and carnage far and wide. This tells us there were three groups of people on Earth. The sons of Seth, the sons of Cain and these giants. The sons of Seth who married the daughters of Cain had children and they were mighty men and renown men of old. Mighty identifies them as a warlike people who were oppressors and tyrants. They are also called renown which means they were well know, ruled and were feared.

Genesis 6:5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. (KJV)  . . . This states that the ENTIRE population of Earth, which included both the generations of Seth and Cain were wicked in all they did. So the background of these verses are that God is giving the reason WHY He destroyed man from the Earth. Man had become SO wicked that God had to bring the judgment of the Flood to stop man’s wickedness.

My friend, since the focus is man's sin and wickedness, this Passage has NOTHING at all to do with angels. God judged all the angels at the fall of Satan before Adam and Eve sinned. God’s judgment of the angels was as to their respected roles of #1. Demon angels who rebelled against God, and followed Satan and #2. The righteous angels who did not rebel and followed God. God judged man and destroyed him from off the face of the Earth with the exception of Noah and his family. Angels are not in any way judged in Genesis 6:1-5.

Wickedness all around us! Wickedness is worsening continually, just as it did in the days before the Flood!
