Judgments on Many People
People of Ashdod. Background. They were stricken with God’s judgment because of their idolatry, lack of fear, unconcern and disrespect of God. We see God's triumph over Satan and evil, and we see the Holy ark's triumph over the ridiculous idol, Dagon. This should show us that the kingdom of Satan will certainly fall before the kingdom of Christ! Error will fall before Truth, wickedness will fall before godliness, and corruption will fall before grace! When Christ, the true Ark of the covenant, REALLY enters the heart of fallen man, ALL idols will fall! Remember: the heart of man is Satan's temple (Jer.17:9) . . . until we SEE the Truth and BELIEVE God (1 John 5:10-12) and accept Christ (John 1:12-13; 3:3-8, 15-18, 36; 5:24; 8:24; 14:6; Acts 4:12). THEN, we (our heart), becomes the temple of God (1 Cor.3:16-17; 6:19-20). See: Truth about Salvation
The Lord wants to claim and possess the throne of your heart! But in most cases pride, self-love and lusts for what the world has to offer, wins out over what God wants for you.
They tempted God. 1 Sam.5:1-2 And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Eben-ezer unto Ashdod. When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon. [KJV] . . . These people took the ark of God . . . a Holy possession of Israel . . . NO one except the tribe of Levi was permitted to touch it (Deut.31:25; Jos.3:3; 6:12). Majestic temples were built in honor of this idol which was the principal ‘god’ of the Philistines. Worship of Dagon extended over all Syria. This idol was a combination of a human head, breast, and arms, joined to the belly and tail of a fish. The captured ark was placed in the temple of Dagon, right in front of this horrendous idol.
1 Sam.5:3-4 And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the Lord. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again. And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the Lord; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him. [KJV] . . . God utterly demolished Dagon!
Judgment fulfilled. God’s righteous wrath came down hard on these people in the form of physical suffering.
1 Sam.5:6 But the hand of the Lord was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the coasts thereof. [KJV] . . . Emerods were/are bleeding piles, hemorrhoids in a very aggravated form. (Psalm 78:66; also 1 Sam.5:9).
Amalekites. Background. The Amalekites were nomadic terrorists. They survived by attacking other nations, stealing their wealth and families. Israel could not live in peace as long as the Amalekites existed. Also their corrupt idolatry threatened Israel’s relationship with God. The only way to protect Israel was to utterly destroy these people. Some times we wonder about God’s decisions BUT, He is a God of wisdom and knows best in ALL things. We should NEVER question God's decisions! His judgments are ALWAYS right!
God’s orders of judgment. 1 Sam.15:3 Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass. [KJV] . . . King Saul disobeyed God and lost his kingdom because he destroyed only trash, and kept all the good things. When a person disobeys God, judgment is sure to come!
