GOD'S O.T. WRATH? . . . N.T. WRATH?

Does the Old Testament paint a different picture of God than the One who came in the flesh and dwelt among us as Christ? The Bible says that God does NOT change.

Malachi 3:6 For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed. [KJV] . . . The Lord . . . Jehovah: a Name that implies His unchangeable faithfulness in fulfilling His Promises: the covenant name of God to the Jews (Ex.6:3), called here "the sons of Jacob," in reference to God's covenant with that patriarch. God clearly states: "I change not." Sometimes people think that because God has not yet executed judgment on the wicked, that He has changed from what He once was, that being a God of judgment.

I really think that sometimes Christians read the New Testament selectively. Jesus' First Coming was a time of Special Grace and Mercy. There is absolutely NO doubt whatsoever about that.

There is an extreme amount of mercy, patience, and forgiveness shown by Jesus during His earthly ministry. But: (1) Jesus' earthly ministry was a special season of mercy prior to judgment.

Luke 13:6-9 He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none. [7] Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground? [8] And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it: [9] And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down. [KJV] Jesus' words.

If you focus on the merciful acts of Jesus during His three years of ministry, it does NOT give you a complete picture of Jesus' true character. You must balance it with the terrible things that Jesus said would happen: #1 IF people did not repent, #2 what Jesus said about His Second Coming, and #3 how Jesus appears in other New Testament books.

I think many people overlook or ignore Jesus' tough "Old Testament" side. They do not want to think about the dangerous and harsh Jesus, so they close their eyes to: #1 Jesus being the One Person who speaks more about Hell and the punishments of Hell, than anyone else in the Bible. #2 Jesus' many calls to repentance with repeated warnings of judgment, if people do not repent (Luke 13:1-5). #3 Parables spoken by Jesus, such as the Parable of the Ten Pounds (Luke 19:24-27) or the Parable of the Vineyard (Luke 20:9-19) which end in terrible punishments. #4 The cleansing of the temple (Mat.21:12). #5 or the cursing of the fig tree (Mat.21:18-22) which are certainly not peaceful actions by Jesus. #6 What about the hard sayings "pluck out your eye," "cut off your hand" (Mat.18:8-14) and #7 harsh words of Jesus, such as calling people "hypocrites," "blind guides," "vipers," "white washed tombs," and "the one doomed to destruction." (Mat.23:13-33).

CONSIDER: Revelation 1:13-18 And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle. [14] His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire; [15] And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters. [16] And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength. [17] And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last: [18]  I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. [KJV] . . . John fell at his feet as dead. Daniel did too (Dan.10:5-10). When sinners come Face to face with Jesus in His glorified Body, they too shall fall at His feet as dead! They will NOT be able to stand in His Presence!

Rev.6:15-17 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; [16] And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: [17] For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand? [KJV] . . . NO one will be able to endure God's wrath.

Jesus predicted the terrible destruction of Jerusalem, which was a judgment from God because of the people's sin. And predictions about His Second Coming which is a time for "the Son of Man to come" (Mat.25:31) and "separate" (Mat.25:32) and "judge mankind" (Mat.25:41).

I think that the harshest of God's judgments is actually found in the New Testament, NOT the Old Testament. Think about a perfectly innocent Man condemned to die by the most cruel means possible, for the sins of other people. Of course, I mean Jesus dying for our sins on the cross. "It was the Lord's will to crush Him and cause Him to suffer" (Isa.53:4,10; Mat.26:39; 27:46). That has to be the harshest judgment in all the Bible. God did not spare His only begotten Son, but allowed to be sacrificed in OUR place. WHY would He not be angry at anyone who refused His offer, who rejected His Sons's Sacrifice on that Horrid cross? He has every right to His anger, His wrath toward sinners!

God has NOT changed! Nor will He ever change! He vented His wrath upon the wicked in the Old Testament, and He shall do the same in the future. The Jesus of the New Testament is really no different, than the God of the Old Testament. Indeed, He is one and the same.
