What Does GOD Have to Say?
Greed, Avarice, Coveting, Chapter 7
Greed is the excessive desire for acquiring more than you need;never satisfied
with what you have. Avarice is greed for riches. Coveting is the intense desire
for that which someone else has; craving; envy; jealousy of another’s possessions.
Exodus 20:17Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.
This is the tenth commandment of the Mosiac Law, which was given to the nation Israel (Deut.5:1). The Lord did not want His people, Israel, to covet; nor does He want His people, the church, to covet, as we will see. If you covet anything of anybody, you sin!
Psalm 10:2-3The wicked in his pride doth persecute the poor: let them be taken in the devices that they have imagined. 3 For the wicked boasteth of his heart's desire, and blesseth the covetous, whom the Lord abhorreth.
Proud, evil men, most of them rich and/or in authority are the ones most likely to oppress the poor. They devise schemes in which to trap the poor and/or elderly and take what little these people have. It will NOT always be like this! They will receive their just punishment!
These wicked ones care nothing at all for God, all they care about is their greed; their only goal is more, more, more, no matter who it hurts. They actually brag on the evils they do.
Luke 12:15And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
Jesus says that the good life has nothing to do with riches. The majority of people would definitely disagree with this! We should stop wishing for what we do not have, what the Jones’ have; for that is covetousness, and that is sin. The ‘good life’ consists of love, peace, joy and contentment, and the knowledge you have eternal life. You can have ALL these . . . IF you turn to Jesus and trust Him.
Col. 3:5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
“Mortify” means we should consider these things dead to ourselves; we should NOT respond
to them. “Fornication” is sexual immorality. I know . . . the world thinks it is OK; but God
does NOT think it’s OK! It is a sin! “Uncleanness” is dirty thoughts, words, looks, gestures,
jokes, pornography, etc. “Inordinate affection” is uncontrolled passion or lust. “Evil concupiscence” isevil, abnormal desires, especially sex. “Covetousness, which is idolatry”. HOW CAN COVETOUSNESS BE IDOLATRY?If all you think about is how to get more, more. If all you can think about is earthly possessions; THAT is your god! That is what you worship!It’s wrong.
Ephes. 5:3But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;
WHO is a “saint”? It is ALL God’s children. HE says we are righteous when we accept Jesus! (See Mt.27:52; Ro.16:2,15; 1 Co.1:2; 6:1,2; 14:33; 2 Co.1:1; Ep.1:15,18; EP.2:19; 6:18).
