CULTS
Cult: The Children of God (C.O.G.) The Family
Founder: Moses David Berg, organized 1968
The original Jesus "freaks"
Cult Beliefs/Characteristics:
1. Flirty fishing: Practice religious prostitution. Berg bases it on Jesus' statement, "I will make you fishers of men". He says that any means is acceptable to bring people into "the kingdom of God"
2. Child sex. Publish child pornography in their cult publications.
3. As with many cults, much missionary activity in America and abroad.
4. Their children don't always go to main stream schools.
5. Charges dismissed in Argentina of child abuse and slavery.
6. Mind control over members.
Cult: Jehovah's Witness . . . Russellism
Founder: Charles Taze Russell, organized 1880
He condemns the teaching of the church of all ages . . . only the JW's supposedly know the truth.
Cult Beliefs/Characteristics:
#1. Jesus did not rise from the dead. Russell says His body either dissolved into gases or is still preserved somewhere. (Everything a TRUE Christian believes hangs on this one FACT. Paul says, If Christ be not risen, your faith is vain. 1 Cor.15:14,17)
#2. God is not triune: Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. The Bible states clearly God IS a Trinity (Mat.3:16; 28:19; Mark 1:9-11; John 14:26; I John 5:7).
#3. There is NO such thing as a Hell of everlasting torment. Hell is just the grave. The wicked are simply annihilated. There is absolutely NOTHING in the Bible about souls being annihilated! There absolutey is a PLACE called Hell! See our articles on Hell.
#4. Man has no spirit. The Bible states clearly man DOES have a spirit (Gen.1:26-27; 1 Thes.5:23; Job 32:8; Pro.20:27; Ecc.12:7; Acts 7:59; James 2:26)
#5. The Holy Ghost is not a person of the Godhead, just a "life force" of God. He is definitely called God in the Bible and is recorded speaking and commanding (John 14:17,26; 15:26; Acts 8:29; 10:19; Rom.8:9; Gal.4:6; 1 John 2:27; 3:24; 4:13).
#6. They use mind control over members.
#7. Man must work to be part of "God's system of things." This is certainly NOT a Biblical phrase. The Bible says, "For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves. It is the gift of God, not of works lest any man should boast." (Eph.2:8-9)
#8. The 144,000 will live in Heaven with God. This is absolutely stupid. The 144,000 in Revelation is one of the most clear Passages in the entire Scripture! The 144,000 are JEWS . . . 12,000 from each of 12 tribes of JEWS! (Rev.chapter 7).
#9. Three things they do or don't do: (1) They take no blood transfusions. (2) They knock on people's doors, because they say that's they way Jesus usually shared. NO! He did NOT! The multitudes flocked to Him. (3) They call God by His "personal name", Jehovah.
#10. All dead people will have a second chance for eternal life at the millennium. If you do not prove worthiness at this time, you'll be destroyed. The Bible says that it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment (Heb.9:27) NO second chances!
#11. The Blood of Christ does not forgive sins, it gives us a "chance" to live again. They have NO assurance of salvation. The Bible tells us we can KNOW, can be assured (John 5:24; 20:31; Tit.1:2; 1 John 5:13). The Bible says the blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth us from all sin . Common sense question--Why would God send His Son to die if there was another way to be saved?)
#12. Jesus is the archangel Michael . . . a created being. Jesus was the CREATOR . . . NOT a created being! (John 1:1-3; Col.1:16; Heb1:2). The Bible says that Jesus is the Word who was in the beginning with God and was God. The Bible also says, "God was manifest in the flesh.")
#13. Jesus is just an agent of God, nothing more. Jesus is GOD (John 10:30).
#14. They said Jesus' Second Coming already occurred invisibly in 1874. Russell's successor, Rutherford, says this was confirmed by the creation of the first labor organization in 1874. But the Bible says every eye will see Him (Rev.1:7).
#15. Russell said that in 1914 the millennium would occur and righteousness would be restored to the earth. As 1914 approached, he, and his successor, changed the date to 1915, 1916, 1924, 1928, and on and on to the present day! When you ask a JW about this, they'll tell you "The Watch Tower is reaching different levels of enlightenment." The JWs do NOT believe the Bible, or they would know Russell was a false prophet. Deuteronomy 18:22 says, "When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken..."
#16. They have much literature, with interesting titles like, "Where are the Dead", "To Hell and Back Again", "Millions now living shall never die." They have slick, attractive pictures and topics. But many people do not stop to consider if these things are true and in accordance with the Bible. They pass them out everywhere.
JW's claims to be the sole Christian religion and authority on the Earth today, as well as God's mouthpiece or prophet. They further disrupt families with its harsh and unbiblical interpretation of "disfellowshipping" and the practice of "shunning." Family members who are former JWs are labeled JW's as "apostates" and prevented from even social contact. Disfellowshipped or disassociated children, parents, and grandparents are not allowed any type of communication with active members. Divorces are common within the cult, when one member becomes gets fed up with JW's teaching and mind-control.
The JWs are best known for their practices of refusing: (1) to serve in the military; (2) to salute the flag; (3) to celebrate Christmas, birthdays, or other holidays; and (4) to give or to accept blood transfusions.
Rejecting the vaccinations, organ transplants, and blood transfusions, the JW's have caused the deaths of many of its members in the past . . . BUT . . . vaccinations and organ transplants have now been accepted by the JW's acceptable . . . which contradicts their previous doctrinal position.
Five Fairy Tales of Jehovah's Witnesses
#1: The JWs are polytheist, believing in both a big God, Jehovah, and a little God, Jesus Christ.
Fact: JWs are monotheist, believing only in Jehovah the Father who is the one true God in their eyes . . . and in His son, Jesus Christ, who they say is NOT God in any way.
#2: JWs are pacifist and refuse to pay taxes.
Fact: JWs refer to their stand as neutrality, not pacifism; that is, they are not against the use of force or even killing; rather they seek to maintain strict neutrality in the world's affairs, not taking sides or serving any government. The JW's do pay taxes.
#3: JWs will not accept blood for any reason.
Fact: They will not accept blood transfusions, but, JWs are permitted to have ALL the component parts of blood plasma.
#4: The Watchtower Society claims to be an inspired prophet with continuing revelations.
Fact: JWs' Governing Body has always enjoyed all the privileges of prophets or apostles without any of the responsibilities. So, technically, though they do not claim to be inspired prophets, in practice, that is just what they are to the millions of JWs around the world. [Due to the resignation of the Governing Body's president and six other board members in October of 2000, JWs formed three new corporations to run its U.S. operations.]
#5: JWs are super-zealots living exemplary Christian lives.
Fact: The reason for their super zealot reputation is their active door-to-door ministry. They even entered my house when I was not here and left their literature on my table. IF evangelical TRUE Christians had half their willingness to serve, what a difference it would make in this world! But what are their motives? Mainly . . . . fear and guilt. The strict control of the organization brings about conformity in moral standards.
