RIGHTEOUSNESS
Introduction
Righteousness is a right standing before God, it is being right before God. It is being justified by God. Justification is a legal term, which is the exact opposite of condemnation. When God justifies us, He pardons ALL the sins of those who believe in Christ Jesus’ Work on the cross; and He accepts and treats them as righteous in the eye of the law. In addition to being pardoned for our sin, justification declares that all the claims of the law are satisfied in regard to the one who is justified. It is the act of a judge and not of a sovereign. The law is NOT set aside, but is declared to be fulfilled completely; so the person justified is declared to be entitled to all the advantages and rewards arising from perfect obedience to the law (Rom.5:1-10). This happens when the perfect righteousness of His Representative and Surety, Jesus Christ is imputed or credited to the believer by God Himself (Rom.10:3-9).
Justification is not God forgiving us without righteousness, but His declaring that we now possess the only righteousness which perfectly and for ever satisfies the law; that being the absolute righteousness of Christ Jesus (1 Cor.1:30; 2 Cor. 5:21; Rom. 4:6-8). The one and only sole condition on which this righteousness is imputed or credited to believers is FAITH in or on the Lord Jesus Christ. Faith does NOT possess any merit; it is simply the channel or instrument by which our soul adopts and grabs hold of Christ and His righteousness (Rom.1:17; 3:25-26; 4:20, 22; Phil.3:8-11; Gal.2:16). It is simply our faith which therefore obtains and secures our justification . . . which also obtains and secures at the same time our sanctification. Sanctification is being set apart for God; in other words, becoming His child (John 1:12-13; 3:3-8). We must be born again into God’s family!
Good works will NEVER gain our justification, but they certainly are the result of justification (Rom. 6:14; 7:6).
RIGHTEOUSNESS
Chapter 1
The Righteous Are Compared to:
LIGHT
Matthew 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. (KJV) . . . You cannot hide a city that is sitting on top of a hill. Its light at night can be seen for miles. IF we live for Christ, we will glow like lights, showing others what Christ is like.
HOW do we hide our light? (1.) by being quiet when we should speak, (2.) by going along with the crowd, compromising, (3.) by denying the Light (Jesus), (4.) by letting sin dim our light, (5.) by not explaining our Light to others, or (6.) by ignoring the needs of others. We as Jesus’ disciples must be like a beacon in a lighthouse on a rocky shore, there to keep someone from a shipwreck. We must not shut our light off from the world.
Philip. 2:15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; (KJV) . . . We should live lives of moral purity, patience and peacefulness, so that we will “shine like stars” (Dan.12:3), in a dark and corrupt world. A transformed life should be an effective witness to the power of God’s Word. Are you a light for Jesus or are you a dark cloud for Satan with all your grumbling and bickering?
VESSELS OF GOLD AND OF SILVER
2 Timothy 2:20 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. (KJV) . . . Paul is speaking to the professing Christian church (1 Tim.3:15). Many people PROFESS to be Christians, but in reality, they do not POSSESS Christ in their hearts and lives. Like the Parable of the Net (Mat.13:47-49), gathering together of every kind, good and bad; as the good and bad cannot be distinguished while in the sea, but only when brought to shore, so too believers and unbelievers continue in the same Church, until Judge Jesus on Judgment Day will make the final separation. The righteous represent vessels of gold and silver, while sinners (hypocrites) represent vessels of wood and earth. Vessels of gold and silver are those who “build on the Rock” while the vessels of wood and of earth are foolish hypocrites who build on sand (Mat.7:21-29) and too those who build on wood, hay and stubble that shall be burned up at the Judgment (1 Cor. 3:12-15). WHICH ARE YOU?
OBEDIENT CHILDREN
1 Peter 1:14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: (KJV) . . . After we commit our lives to Christ, we will still feel like we are being pulled back to our old ways. This is normal and even the most godly people experience this (Rom.7:14-25). We are to be holy, for God is holy (1 Pet.1:16). Holy = totally devoted or dedicated to God, set aside for His special use and set apart from sin and its control over us.
We are set apart and different, we do not blend in with the crowd. We have God’s qualities in our lives. Our focus and priorities must be His, completely opposite of our old ways. We CANNOT become holy on our own! God gives us His Holy Spirit (Rom.8:9) to help us obey and to give us power to overcome sin. Don’t use the excuse: the devil made me do it. Call on God’s power to free you from sin’s grip.
SHEEP
John 10:14-15 I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. [15] As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. (KJV) . . . Jesus is the Good Shepherd, and He knows EVERY ONE of His sheep (2 Tim. 2:19), and He is known by His sheep. The soul of a TRUE believer (God’s child) responds to His Voice in an obedient manner. The Shepherd's knowledge of us is an active element, which penetrates us with His power and love, and which we willingly receive and absorb.
John 10:27-28 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: [28] And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. Jesus says that He gives unto us eternal life. (KJV) . . . NOT will give, but gives! It is a NOW gift, NOT sometime later! Do you realize how wonderful this is? Check out the following verses!
John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. (KJV) . . . Hath = HAS NOW! The very MOMENT that you sincerely believe God (1 John 5:10-13), and accept His only begotten Son to save you (John 3:16) . . . you HAVE eternal life!
John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. (KJV) . . . I simply cannot see how anyone can believe that once a person is truly saved, they can lose their salvation. I believe once saved, always saved, and these are just some of the verses that back this up. When we believe in/on Jesus, He GIVES us eternal life, NOW! Once we have eternal life, it is ours forever! We shall never perish in the depths of Hell, and NO one can grab us away from Jesus, NO one, not even the devil! What a wonderful Saviour we have!
THIRSTY DEER
Psalm 42:1 As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. (KJV) . . . Deer depend upon water to survive, so too, our lives here and now, and in the future, depend upon God. Only those who seek Him and desire to understand Him will ever find everlasting life. If we do not hunger and thirst after righteousness, we will never be filled.
http://www.hisservants.org/books_hungering_and_thirsting_for_god.html
Matthew 5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. (KJV) . . . Do you feel separated from God? Don’t rest until you restore your relationship with Him. The psalmist knew that his very life depended on it.
Psalm 63:1 O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is; (KJV) . . . Did you ever feel like this? Like David, I have, and I didn’t like the feeling.
BRANCHES OF A VINE
John 15:2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. (KJV) . . . Some branches on fruit trees may be fruitful, while others are barren. It is the same with believers of Christ; some may be spiritually fruitful while others produce NO spiritual fruit whatsoever. He cuts off every branch that doesn't produce fruit, and He prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. So . . . what makes a branch unfruitful?
Mark 4:19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful. (KJV) . . . The cares of this world is worry, anxiety an unrelaxed life. The deceitfulness of riches is the LOVE of money, for it is the root of all evil (1 Tim.6:10). Stockpile your treasures in Heaven (Mat.6:19-21). The lusts of other things entering in is the pleasures of this life. All these "choke the word”; for it draws so much of our attention, absorbs so much of our interest and uses up so much of our time, that only a tiny residue of our time and energy remain for spiritual things and we are left with a ragged, hurried, and heartless religion. Not at all “righteous.”
John 15:4-5 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. [5] I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. (KJV) . . . How can a branch bear fruit by itself? It CANNOT! It must abide in the Vine, it must be attached to the Vine or the lone branch is totally fruitless spiritually. Being without Christ is a branch that is disconnected from a vine, for without Christ in our life is like being disconnected from Him! We can do NOTHING that is spiritually acceptable to God the Father.
FRUITFUL TREES PLANTED BY RIVERS
Psalm 1:3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. (KJV) . . . Whatever he does prospers, does NOT mean that Christians (the righteous) are immune from failure or difficulties. Neither is it a guarantee of health, wealth and happiness. When the Bible speaks of prosperity, it means that when we apply God’s wisdom, the fruit that we bear will be good and receive God’s approval. Just as trees soak up water and bears delightful fruit, we are to soak up God’s Word, and produce actions and attitudes (fruit) that honor God. If it is our desire to achieve anything worthwhile, we must soak up God’s Word, like a tree soaks up water! Are you planted by the River of God’s Word?
WHEAT
Matthew 3:12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. (KJV) . . . On Judgment Day, Jesus shall separate the wheat (believers, the righteous) from the chaff (unbelievers, wicked). The wheat shall be stored in the garner (a symbol for Heaven). But He will burn up the chaff. Chaff is worthless professors of religion (hypocrites), void of all solid religious principle and character (Ps. 1:4). With unquenchable fire meaning Hell. YES! There is a Hell. http://www.judgmentcoming.org/j_c_hell_is_it_there.htm
To me, this is extremely sad. For some reason, God has given a great burden to me . . . that of lost souls. It deeply pains me when I have to tell people that God will send most people to Hell.
Matthew 7:13-14 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. (KJV) . . . I must tell it because God clearly STATES it. Only a few will make it to Heaven. Will you be one of them? You can be! You do NOT have to go to Hell!
http://www.judgmentcoming.org/j_c_books_what_must_i_do_to_be_saved.html
Matthew 13:29-30 But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. [30] Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn. (KJV) . . . Young weeds and the young wheat look very much the same, so to try to pull out the weeds, you would pull out some wheat too. The wheat represents believers (the righteous) as above. The tares (weeds) here is the same as chaff above. So, this is NOT actual wheat and weeds but the righteous and the wicked. In this parable, Jesus is telling us that it is going to be very difficult to tell the difference between the righteous and the hypocrites as they live on Earth. There are many people who claim “I’m a Christian.” But IF you watch their lives, it soon becomes very clear that they are NOT righteous, NOT possessors of Christ. Only in the harvest (Judgment Day) will the wheat (righteous) and the tares (wicked) be separated; the tares will be burned (Hell) and the wheat (righteous) put in Jesus’ barn (Heaven).
DISCIPLES
ALL disciples are believers, but NOT all believers are disciples. A disciple of Christ is someone who
(1.) Believes His doctrine,
(2.) Rests on His Sacrifice,
(3.) Drinks and absorbs His Spirit,
(4.) Imitates His example (Mat.10:24; Luke 14:26-27,33, John 6:69),
(5.) Obeys Him ( 2 Cor. 10:5; 1 Pet.1:14; Acts 5:29).
(6.) Loves Him and makes Him #1 in their life (Mat.10:37-38; Luke 14:26)
Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. (KJV) . . . Obey Jesus!
Luke 8:21 And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it. (KJV) . . . Obedience to Jesus puts us in His family.
John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments. (KJV) . . . Do you love Jesus? What are His commandments?
Matthew 22:36-40 Master, which is the great commandment in the law? [37] Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. [38] This is the first and great commandment. [39] And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. [40] On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. (KJV) . . . LOVE is His commandments!
Romans 2:13 (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified. (KJV) . . . Hearing God’s Word does NOT justify a person. Only those who DO (obey) God’s Word are justified. Justified = just as if I’d never sinned. Declared not guilty in the courts of Heaven.
John 6:69 And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God. (KJV) . . . A TRUE disciple of Christ (a righteous person) must believe and be sure in their heart that Jesus is the Son of the living God. Do you believe this?
Matthew 10:38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. (KJV) . . . To take up our cross is to deny self for the cause of Christ. It means to follow Jesus, be willing to publicly identify with Him, even when you know you may experience almost certain conflict and hostility. It means to persevere even in the darkest hours; and be willing to face even suffering and death for His sake, if need be. A Christian life is not easy! If Jesus’ Spirit did not help us, we would not make it.
Matthew 10:37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. (KJV) . . . Jesus MUST be FIRST in your heart and life. He come FIRST in all things!
Luke 14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. (KJV) . . . Hate here means to love less. Jesus must come first in our life or we are NOT His disciple.
John 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; (KJV) . . . We must live by what Jesus teaches in God’s Holy Word. Continue is to abide, dwell, endure, remain, stand up for.
John 13:35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. (KJV) . . . See Mat.22:36-40, above. LOVE is our command! Do unto others as you would want them do to you (Mat.7:12; Gal.5:14; Rom. 13:8-10).
John 15:8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. (KJV) . . . Only if you (a branch) have a right relationship with Christ (the Vine) can you bear fruit in your life that is pleasing to God. By producing fruit, you give glory to the Father and show that you are Jesus’ disciple.
Matthew 28:19-A Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, - - - - - - (KJV) . . . Most Christians fall short on this one. They think telling of Jesus is for preachers and teachers only. WRONG! ALL who profess to be Christians must go ye therefore! Are you going?
RIGHTEOUSNESS
Chapter 2 Fruits of Righteousness
Psalm 15:1-5 Lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill? [2] He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. [3] He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour. [4] In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the Lord. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not. [5] He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved. (KJV) . . . Do you walk uprightly, work righteousness and speak the truth in your heart?
Psalm 24:3-5 Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? or who shall stand in his holy place? [4] He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. [5] He shall receive the blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation. (KJV) . . . Do you have clean hands and a pure heart?
Psalm 106:3 Blessed are they that keep judgment, and he that doeth righteousness at all times. (KJV) . . . Do you do righteousness at all times?
Proverbs 11:30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise. (KJV) . . . The righteous are like trees that bear life-giving fruit, and those who tell of Jesus are wise (Mat.28:19; Dan.12:3).
Proverbs 12:28 In the way of righteousness is life; and in the pathway thereof there is no death. (KJV) . . . The way of the righteous leads to eternal life; their narrow path does not lead to death (Mat.7:13-14).
Matthew 12:35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. (KJV) . . . A righteous person produces good words and good works from a good heart, but an evil person produces evil words and evil works from an evil heart.
John 3:21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.(KJV) . . . When is most criminal acts performed? At night! In the dark. They do not want anyone to see their vile acts. But, those who do what is right come into the light gladly, so everyone can see that they are doing what is right in God’s eyes. Then there are those so-called Christians who don’t want their lives exposed to God’s light because they are afraid of what will be revealed. They don’t want to be changed. It will be this type of person who feels threatened by your desire to obey God and do what is right, because they are afraid that the light in you may expose some of the darkness and evil in their lives. Don’t be discouraged, keep them in prayer, that they will see it is better to live in light, rather than in darkness.
Romans 5:1-5 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: [2] By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. [3] And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; [4] And patience, experience; and experience, hope: [5] And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. (KJV) . . . Faith is a gift of God (Ephes. 2:8). Faith is also a fruit of the Spirit (Gal.5:22-23). Faith is trusting God in all things.
Romans 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. (KJV) . . . The Kingdom of God is not what we eat or drink. It is living a right and just life that is pleasing to God. Righteousness gives us peace and joy in our lives, through the Holy Spirit.
RIGHTEOUSNESS
Chapter 3 Mortify all sin
Galatians 5:15-26 But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. (KJV) . . . Love is our command (Mat.22:36-40, above). But if hatred, anger, greed, etc. is in our heart instead of love, there will be biting and devouring one another like wild animals. When we are not motivated by love, we become critical and judgmental of others. We stop looking for good in them and see only their faults.
Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. (KJV) . . . If the spirit that is in us is at ease with our sin, then it is NOT a spirit that comes from the Holy Spirit, but that of the devil. Beware!
Galatians 5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. (KJV) . . . The Holy Spirit struggles against the flesh, for they are at complete odds with each other. The Spirit strives against the flesh and its evil influence; the flesh against the Spirit and His good influence. Our old sinful nature loves to do evil, which is exactly opposite of what the Holy Spirit wants for us. The Spirit is of God (Rom.8:9) and gives us desires that are opposite from our sinful natural desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, and our choices are never free from this battle. Even godly men like the apostle Paul suffered (Rom.7:14-25).
Galatians 5:18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. (KJV) . . . IF we allow ourselves to be led by the Holy Spirit of God, we are not under the Law, we are under grace (Rom. 6:14-15).
Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, whichare these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, [20] Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, [21] Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. (KJV) . . . This confirms the works of the flesh. Adultery, fornication is sexual sin including incest, prostitution and homosexuality; uncleanness is moral impurity including pornography and filthiness; lasciviousness is wantonness, petulance, careless insolence as someone dressing to excite sexual desires; idolatry is worship of anyone or anything besides Almighty God, and covetousness (Col.3:5, below);
Any and all witchcraft is absolutely considered an abomination to God. Black magic, necromancy, voodoo, psychics, palm readers, horoscopes, divining, the Harry Potter books, etc. ALL are sin! (Ex.22:18; Lev.19:31; 20:6,27; Deut.18:10;1 Sam.15:23; 2 Kings 21:6; 1 Chron.10:13; 2 Chron.33:6); hatred is hostility; opposition; animosity, variance is quarreling, wrangling, contention, debates, strife; emulations is jealousy, malice, envy, a fiery mind, rage; strife is contention, conflict; seditions is disunion, division; heresies is disunion, cults, dissenting views, apostasy, falsehoods; envyings is ill-will, belittling, resentfulness, grudges; murders is to slay, to kill, it is abortion; hatred (above) can lead to murder (1 Jn.3:15); drunkenness is being intoxicated, stimulated, this also refers to the use of drugs; revellings is wild parties, rioting. They which do such things shall NOT inherit the Kingdom of God. The works of the flesh are NOT to be practiced by God’s TRUE children! A righteous person will run as fast as they can in the opposite direction!
Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, [23] Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. (KJV) . . . Paul names 17 works of the flesh, while he lists only 9 of the fruit of the Spirit, which is the unrestrained work of the Holy Spirit in us. Only the Holy Spirit can produce these character traits in us, because they are found in the nature of Christ. They are the by-products of Christ’s control of us We CANNOT obtain them without His help. If we want the fruit of the Spirit to grow in us, we must join our lives to His (John 15:4-5). We must know Him, love Him, believe and trust Him, imitate Him and OBEY Him! Only when we do, will we fulfill the intended purpose of the commands that He gave to us: to love God and our neighbors (Mat.22:36-40). Please do not quench the Spirit (1 Thes.5:19); let Him work in your life, let Him produce all the Christ-like fruit of the Spirit!
Col. 3:5-11 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: [6] For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: [7] In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. [8] But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. [9] Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; [10] And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: [11] Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all. (KJV) . . . Mortify = deaden, be dead to, kill. We are to put death the sinful, worldly things lurking within us. All sexual sin, impurity, lust, and shameful desires must go. Remember that even thoughts of adultery (Mat.5:28) is actually like committing that act. We must not be greedy, for that is idolatry. Before Christ comes into our hearts and lives, sin and its penalty is the last thing on our minds. But, when Jesus comes in, sin must go out!
If a righteous person continues on in works of the flesh, they shall feel God's terrible anger. And, IF they refuse to mortify the works of the flesh, they are NOT children of God, but instead children of the devil. This is made perfectly clear in God’s Word.
1 John 3:10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. (KJV) . . . We must get rid of anger, hatred, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language, and we must not lie to each other (Rev.21:8). A righteous person must strip off the old evil nature and all its wicked thoughts and deeds. We must put on a brand-new nature that is continually being renewed as we learn more and more about Christ. For it was He who created this new nature within us. In our new life, Christ is all that matters, for He lives within each of us.
Col. 3:12-14 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; [13] Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. [14] And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. (KJV) . . . This sounds very much like the fruit of the Spirit in Gal.5:22-23. .
Col. 3:15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. (KJV) . . . Unless Christ rules in our hearts, we are doomed!
Mark 7:21-22 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, [22] Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: (KJV) . . . Everything that we think, do or say, starts in our heart. So unless you allow Christ to control you, all the works of the flesh will control you! It’s your choice! A Christian life is not easy and living a righteous life is impossible without Jesus!
Eph. 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; (KJV) . . . We must follow Jesus’ example in everything we do. Since we God’s children, we must try to be like Him.
Eph.2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: (KJV) . . . Before Jesus came into our hearts and lives, we walked according to the flesh, going along with the world, listening to the devil. We were children of disobedience, whereas now we are children of God! Our life now must be controlled by Jesus, a life filled with love for God and for those around us.
Eph.2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. (KJV) . . . Our life before Jesus was filled with sin and disobedience. We were by nature, children of wrath. To sin meant nothing to us! The lusts of the flesh were fulfilled and we never even regretted it. But, after Jesus, any time that we sin, the Spirit within us convicts us of the wrong we have done (John 16:8-9).
Eph.2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, (KJV) . . . Our God is so rich in mercy. Why? Because of His great love for us. Do you thank Him?
Eph.2:5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) (KJV) . . . We were once dead in our sins, but He has raised us to a spiritual life in Christ. Only by grace are we saved!
Eph.2:6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: (KJV) . . . Because of Christ’s resurrection, we know that our bodies will also be raised from the dead (1 Cor. 15:2-23). But, we have been given the power to live as righteous Christians now (Eph.1:19). Eternal life with Christ is certain because we are united in His powerful victory (John 5:24).
Eph.2:7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. (KJV) . . . God’s eternal love for us is the fountain of all His mercies which flow to us; and that love of God is great love, and that mercy is rich mercy. Every converted sinner is a saved sinner, delivered from sin and its penalty. The grace that saves is the free, undeserved goodness and favor of God; and He saves, not by the works of the law, but through faith in Christ Jesus.
Eph.2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: (KJV) . . . There is NO action or work we can do to help us obtain salvation, BUT, it is God’s intention that our salvation will result in acts of service. We are not saved merely for our own benefit but to serve Christ and build up the church (Ephes. 4:12).
Eph.2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. (KJV) . . . Salvation is NOT a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. Salvation is a GIFT from God! It is FREE!
Romans 1:22-23 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, [23] And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. (KJV) . . . Man is NOT getting better and better. It is the opposite! This contradicts some of the false doctrines of today that claim man is god. I will stand firm with the Bible and what it teaches. Man is moving away from God, faster and faster each day. The world is probably farther from God today than at any time in history. They do not give Him His rightful place, they think that mankind is self-sufficient. Many say that God is dead.
Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools. The wisdom of man is foolishness with God (1 Cor.3:19). Man searches for truth through logical reasoning but arrives at a philosophy (guess) that is absolutely absurd in God’s eyes.
And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. . . . Have you noticed that the unsaved world has made cartoons of God? And there are uncounted images and idols of the heathen. They turn the glory of the uncorruptible God into the likeness of an image of corruptible man or beast. In reality, idolatry is a cartoon of God; it is out and out slander against Him. Personally I cannot go along with ANY pictures of Jesus. We do NOT know what He looks like. Today, Jesus is the glorified Christ, the transfigured Christ that Peter, James and John saw on the mountain (Mat.17:1-6), where they all fell on their face in fear. If we were to see Him, we too would fall at His Feet as dead, just like John did (Rev, 1:17). Jesus is NOT that picture you have hanging on your wall. He is the glorified Christ today. Don’t insult God by having a picture of Him! (Ex.20:4). The Greeks made their gods like men; the Assyrians, Egyptians and Babylonians made their gods like beasts and birds and creeping things. I pray that you worship Almighty God in spirit and in truth (John 4: 23-24).
Romans 1:24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: (KJV) . . . Man’s degeneration is measured by his perversion of sex. A multitude of churches today are embracing and defending sex perversion instead of condemning it. God says He has given them up. Idolatry and gross immorality are the bitter fruits of rejecting God’s revelation of righteousness. God gave them up means God literally allowed them to do the shameful, wicked things in their hearts. This is a positive action, not a passive attitude. BEWARE! Do you want God to give you up to the devil? To Hell?
Romans 1:25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. (KJV) . . . Instead of believing the Truth about God, people deliberately choose to believe lies. So they worshiped the things God made but not the Creator Himself. They actually turn from God to Satan, the author of lies and the father of idolatry. Idolatry can lead to the lowest depths of moral degradation.
Romans 1:26-27 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: [27] And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. (KJV) . . . These are worldly passions of dishonor, disgrace and depravity. These are works and lust of the flesh, no matter what public opinion is today. Homosexuality is a SIN! The Bible says so!
Romans 1:28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; (KJV) . . . Anyone who claims that he/she can be a child of God and continues to live in perversion, is being deceived by the devil (1 Jn.3:10; 5:2). He/she is not kidding anyone but themself. Only when a person comes to Christ, can they have deliverance.
The next three verses list a frightful list of sins which follow man’s rebellion against God.
Romans 1:29-31 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, [30] Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, [31] Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: (KJV) . . . Most of these I have already commented on previously in this chapter.
Unrighteousness is moral wrongfulness , iniquity, unjust, wrong; maliciousness is badness, depravity, active hostility, evil, malice; sensuality; whisperers is a nag, shrew, pest, troublemaker; Backbiters is talking against, a slanderer, a gossip; haters of God is self-explanatory, people hate God; proud is arrogant, self-satisfied, snobbish; boasters is a braggart; inventors of evil things is someone taking revenge, dreaming up ways to hurt or cheat people, being malicious; disobedient to parents again, self-explanatory, kids are brats because their parents do not teach them about God, without understanding is unintelligent, wicked, foolish; covenantbreakers is someone who does not keep their word or promise; without natural affection is hate instead of love, is abnormal relationships for we live in a day when homosexuality is being accepted as normal conduct. Humanity sinks to its lowest level when it accepts homosexuality. That was the sin that caused God to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen.18:20); implacable is truce-less, truce-breaker; unmerciful is without love, mercy or compassion.
Romans 1:32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. (KJV) . . . Man has a revelation from God, by God’s Holy Word, and by God’s true servants; but he flagrantly flaunts any and all Truth by challenging the judgment of God against such sins. He continues to practice his/her sins and worse yet, they egg on and applaud and approve and support those who do the same. Continued sin brings eternal death.
The following Passage is today too!
2 Tim. 3:1-7 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. [2] For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, [3] Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, [4] Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; [5] Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. [6] For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, [7] Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. (KJV) . . . The last days speaks of the last days of the church, immediately preceding the rapture of the church. How much longer will God tolerate sin and be patient with us? He has judged great nations in the past who have gone in the wrong direction.
I believe that the Bible is here for our learning. We should pay close attention to what went on in the past. God has always punished sin! He clearly tells us what He expects from us and that is to live a righteous life with the help of Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
Eph. 4:31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: (KJV) . . . Again, God reminds us to live a righteous life! Walk in the Spirit, NOT the flesh.
Golden Rule
Matthew 7:12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. (KJV)
Galatians 5:14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. (KJV)
Romans 13:9-10 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. (KJV) . . . Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
RIGHTEOUSNESS
Chapter 4 We ALL Are Born Sinners
Psalm 51:5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. (KJV) . . . David, as well as the rest of us, came into the world with a sin nature. If we are truthful, we will admit that we are evil, have been evil and will continue to harbor evil thoughts, attitudes and motives. For there is NOT a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not (Ecc. 7:20).
There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness (Pro. 30:12). Many think they are “good” but we ALL are susceptible to sin. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing …” (Rom. 7:18). David was honest with himself and God. He confessed that he had a sin nature.
Psalm 53:3 Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. (KJV) . . . This is SO plain! We ALL are sinners! NOT one does good on their own, no not one!
Psalm 58:3 The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies. (KJV) . . . This describes the wicked in general, who sin naturally, easily, viciously, and stubbornly. But WHO are the “wicked?’ God considers anyone without Jesus wicked. The wicked are the ungodly, the unrighteous . . . and anyone without Jesus is ungodly and unrighteous in God’s eyes. So it is our natural instinct to be estranged from God from the womb. We go astray from God as soon as we possibly can. Think how soon little children tell lies!
Isaiah 48:8 Yea, thou heardest not; yea, thou knewest not; yea, from that time that thine ear was not opened: for I knew that thou wouldest deal very treacherously, and wast called a transgressor from the womb. (KJV) . . . The Jews were reproved for their idolatry in this Passage. We all are born children of disobedience. Where original sin is, actual sin will follow. Doesn’t our conscience witness to the Truth of Scripture? We have been rebels from our earliest childhood, rotten through and through. That is why some people never hear the Truth of the Gospel, they rebel at any thought of God. They stop up their ears.
Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. (KJV) . . . Sin makes us so unclean that we cannot even attempt to approach the throne of God’s grace (Isa.6:5; Rom.3:10,23) any more than a beggar in rotten rags could dine at a king’s table. No matter how good the good we do is, our best efforts are still SIN in God’s eyes without Jesus. We must have the righteousness of Jesus (Rom.3:22; 4:3-22; 10:4,10; 1 Cor.1:30; John 6:28-29) or we are doomed. Our only hope is faith in Christ Jesus, who can cleanse us and bring us into God’s Presence (Rom.3). If we come to Him demanding acceptance because of our “good” conduct, God will point out that our righteousness is filth compared to His infinite and Holy righteousness.
Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? (KJV) . . . God makes it clear that sin is a matter of the heart. Our hearts are inclined to sin from the time we are born. Many people fall into the routine of forsaking God. But, it’s our choice whether or not to continue in sin. We can yield to a specific temptation, or we can ask God to help us resist temptation when it comes, and it will come!
Romans 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: (KJV) . . . Paul refers to Ps.14:1-3. No one is innocent. No one is righteous, no one can earn a right standing with God without Jesus! God, through Jesus His Son, has redeemed us and offers to forgive us IF we accept Him in faith.
Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; (KJV) . . . Some sins seem bigger and worse to us than others. Is murder really worse than hatred? (1 John 3:15). Is adultery worse than looking at a woman? (Mat.5:28). Humans tend to categorize sins: your sin is bad, but mine is not so bad (Mat.7:1-5), but this is not how God looks at things. To God, sin is sin. Only He can see a person’s heart, so only He can judge. It is not up to us. All sin makes us sinners, and all sin cuts us off from our holy God. All sin leads to death because it disqualifies us from living with God. ALL sins separate us from God, BUT all sins can be forgiven, through Jesus!
John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. (KJV) . . . Only God can save us from the one thing that we really need to fear: eternal condemnation to Hell (2 Thes.1:8-9). When Jesus talks about unbelievers, He means those who reject or ignore Him completely, not those who have momentary doubts.
John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. (KJV) . . . Jesus says that those who believe in Him HAVE, (not will have), everlasting life. To receive eternal life is to join in God’s life, which by nature is eternal. Eternal life begins at the moment of spiritual rebirth, when we are born into the family of God (John 1:12-13; 3:3-8). Once truly saved, always saved!
John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. (KJV) . . . Again, that beautiful word: HATH! We HAVE eternal life from the moment we believe in/on Jesus by faith.
Eternal life begins the moment that you accept Christ Jesus as Saviour and Lord. At that instant, new life begins in you (2 Cor. 5:17). It is a completed transaction that places you into the family of God. Only Jesus has the power to make you God’s child.
John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: (KJV) . . . You are born again! You are given the Holy Spirit at that very moment! http://www.hisservants.org/books_holy_spirit.html
You still will face physical death unless Jesus comes at the Rapture (1 Thes.4:13-18), but when Christ does return, your body will be resurrected to live forever (1 Cor. 15).
1 John 5:10-13 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. (KJV) . . . If you have trusted Christ as your Saviour, the Holy Spirit dwells within you. When you don’t believe God, you add to your other sins by implying that He is a liar. God says, “Trust Christ, and I’ll save you.” If you say, “I don’t need Christ to be saved,” then you are calling God a liar.
1 John 5:11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. (KJV) . . . The record is: God gives us eternal life, and eternal life is to have Christ.
John 3:15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. (KJV) . . . (Also: John 6:53-54; 10:11,28; 11:25; 14:6; 17:2-3; 20:31)
1 John 5:12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. Whoever has God's Son has eternal life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have eternal life. (KJV) . . . Very clear.
1 John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. (KJV) . . . Do you believe God? Do you believe the record that He gave? If you have Jesus, you have eternal life.
RIGHTEOUSNESS
Chapter 5 RIGHTEOUSNESS, WICKEDNESS
The Book of Proverbs often compares the lifestyles of the wicked and the righteous, and makes a strong case for living God’s way, the righteous way. Here, the advantages of righteous living and the disadvantages of wicked living are pointed out. The kind of person we are, or decide to be, will affect every area of our lives.
OUTLOOK ON LIFE

RESPONSE TO LIFE

Proverbs 24:15-16 Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous; spoil not his resting place: [16] For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief. (KJV) . . . The righteous persevere against evil. The wicked are brought down by calamity.
Proverbs 29:10 The bloodthirsty hate the upright: but the just seek his soul. (KJV) . . . The wicked hate those with integrity.

Proverbs 24:1-2 Be not thou envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them. [2] For their heart studieth destruction, and their lips talk of mischief. (KJV) . . . The righteous are not to be jealous of, nor desire the company of godless people. The wicked plot violence.
Proverbs 28:12 When righteous men do rejoice, there is great glory: but when the wicked rise, a man is hidden. (KJV) . . . When the righteous come to power, everybody is glad. When the wicked take charge, people go into hiding.
Proverbs 29:7 The righteous considereth the cause of the poor: but the wicked regardeth not to know it. (KJV) . . . The righteous care for the poor. The wicked have no concern or compassion for the poor.
Proverbs 29:27 An unjust man is an abomination to the just: and he that is upright in the way is abomination to the wicked. (KJV) . . . The righteous hate dishonesty, deceit and lies. The wicked hate honesty, integrity and goodness.
QUALITY OF LIFE
Proverbs 10:25 As the whirlwind passeth, so is the wicked no more: but the righteous is an everlasting foundation. (KJV) . . . The righteous stand firm because their foundation is on the Rock. The wicked will be swept away because they build on sand (Mat. 7:21-29).
Proverbs 11:6 The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them: but transgressors shall be taken in their own naughtiness. (KJV) . . . The righteous shall be delivered by doing right. The wicked will be trapped by their evil desires.
Proverbs 12:21 There shall no evil happen to the just: but the wicked shall be filled with mischief. (KJV) . . . No lasting harm befalls the righteous. Constant trouble
befalls the wicked.
Proverbs 15:6 In the house of the righteous is much treasure: but in the revenues of the wicked is trouble. (KJV) . . . Righteous income results in treasure pleasing to the Lord. Wicked income results in trouble.
Proverbs 16:17 The highway of the upright is to depart from evil: he that keepeth his way preserveth his soul. (KJV) . . . The righteous goes out of his way to avoid all evil, thus pleasing God and safeguarding his soul.
Proverbs 17:20 He that hath a froward heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief. Froward is distorted, false, defiant, perverse. (KJV) . . . The wicked fall into constant trouble.
Proverbs 28:1 The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion. (KJV) . . . The righteous are bold as lions. The wicked are afraid and run when no one is chasing them.
Proverbs 28:18 Whoso walketh uprightly shall be saved: but he that is perverse in his ways shall fall at once. (KJV) . . . The righteous will be saved. The wicked will be destroyed.
SHORT-TERM RESULTS

Proverbs 11:18 The wicked worketh a deceitful work: but to him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward. (KJV) . . . The reward of the righteous will last forever. The wicked may be rich in this life on Earth, but death will remove it all. (Mat.6:19-24).
Proverbs 11:19 As righteousness tendeth to life: so he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death. (KJV) . . . The righteous are determined to do right and will live; they need not fear death because eternal life is God’s gift to them (John 11:25). The wicked is anyone who insists on doing wrong; they not only find eternal death, but also miss out on blessed life here on Earth.
Proverbs 11:23 The desire of the righteous is only good: but the expectation of the wicked is wrath. (KJV) . . . The righteous always want to do good; they can look forward to future happiness. The wicked are always looking for evil ways, and they can expect only the wrath of God.
Proverbs 12:7 The wicked are overthrown, and are not: but the house of the righteous shall stand. (KJV) . . . The families of the righteous is often continued to the blessed, for they are taught about God. The conduct of the wicked will bring God’s wrath and certain destruction.

GOD’S OPINION OF PEOPLE
Proverbs 11:20 They that are of a froward heart are abomination to the Lord: but such as are upright in their way are his delight. (KJV) . . . The righteous are a delight to the Lord because they always do what is right and good in His eyes. The wicked are hated and despised by the Lord because of their thoughts, words and deeds. Froward means distorted; false, dishonest, perverse.
Proverbs 14:19 The evil bow before the good; and the wicked at the gates of the righteous. (KJV) . . . God shall one day see to it that the wicked will bow before the righteous. This describes the humbling of the wicked by the horrible punishment their sins incur.
Psalm 7:9 Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just: for the righteous God trieth the hearts and reins. (KJV)
Psalm 11:7 For the righteous Lord loveth righteousness; his countenance doth behold the upright. (KJV)
Romans 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; (KJV) . . . We shall be judged according to Jesus’ righteousness, NOT ours, because our righteousnesses (Isa.64:6) just will not hold up in God’s eyes. Jesus’ righteousness must be imputed to us (credited to our account 1 Cor.1:30). God's righteous dominion and judgment is the joy and absolute HOPE of the righteous but is complete TERROR to the wicked.
RIGHTEOUSNESS
Chapter 6 SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS
Job 9:20 If I justify myself, mine own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, it shall also prove me perverse. (KJV) . . . In spite of any good that I do, God will condemn me if I have not accepted Jesus.
Job 35:2 Thinkest thou this to be right, that thou saidst, My righteousness is more than God's? (KJV) . . . There are millions of people who think they can work their way to Heaven. They are WRONG! There are millions of people who think their righteousness is as good as or better than God’s. They are WRONG!
Proverbs 12:15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise. (KJV) . . . Have you ever met a person who “knows it all”? A fool will not listen to anyone’s advice; only a wise man will listen.
Proverbs 16:2 All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the Lord weigheth the spirits. (KJV) . . . A self-righteous person thinks his way is the only way.
Proverbs 20:6 Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find? (KJV) . . . Many people claim to be true and faithful friends; but a true friend is extremely difficult to find. Most people pass up the best Friend that has ever lived . . . Jesus!
Proverbs 21:2 Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the Lord pondereth the hearts. (KJV) . . . Many people think that everything they do is right, but if they do not obey God, everything they do is wrong!
Proverbs 30:12 There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness. (KJV) . . . There are people who think that they are pure and good, but they are as filthy rags (Isa.64:6) in God’s eyes without Jesus.
Matthew 7:1-5 Judge not, that ye be not judged. [2] For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. [3] And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? [4] Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? [5] Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. (KJV) . . . To judge can mean: to decide, to distinguish, to condemn, to avenge, and actually can mean to damn. We are not forbidden to judge others, BUT we are not to judge the inward motives of others in the sense of condemning them. We see only outward acts, God sees the heart.
Jesus compares a speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye to the great big log in your own eye. The “log” is the core of criticism and prejudice within us. With that blocking your vision, you are in no position to judge the little sin of another. Harsh judgment is something of which we all need to be very careful. Do NOT be self-righteous and think you have the right to judge others; for however you judge others, God will judge you!
1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. (KJV) . . . Millions say that they are “good.” But to say you have no sin, you fool only yourself! You are refusing to accept the truth that without Jesus, you are a sinner bound for Hell. Self-righteousness is actually self-deception and in reality, a bald-faced lie in God’s eyes.
Rev. 3:17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: (KJV) . . . Just think of how many rich men in the world who fall into this category. What the Laodiceans could see and buy had become more valuable to them than what is unseen and eternal (Mat.6:19-21). Wealth, luxury and pleasure can make people feel confident and self-satisfied. But no matter how much you possess, how rich you are, how famous you are; you have absolutely NOTHING if you do NOT have an active and personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Worldly riches might make YOU think that you are righteous, and rich . . . but you are wicked and poor as a church mouse in God’s eyes without Jesus!
Luke 18:11-14 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. [12] I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. [13] And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. [14] I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. (KJV) . . . The Pharisee did not go to the temple to pray to God; he went to advertise to all how good he was. The tax collector went to beg for mercy because he realized just how much of a sinner he really was. Self-righteousness is dangerous; leading to pride, causing a person to look down on others, and preventing him/her from learning anything from God.
The tax collector’s prayer was the prayer of a repentant sinner, and should be our prayer because we all need God’s mercy every day. Do NOT let pride cut you off from God. Jesus spoke this parable to those who thought themselves to be righteous, but while all along, they despised others. God sees with what motive and attitude we go to Him in prayer. BEWARE! The Pharisee was NOT seeking justification, for he felt no need of it. The tax collector was poor in spirit and mourned for his sin (Mat.5:3-4). Because he repented and humbled himself, he was justified, forgiven!
RIGHTEOUSNESS
Chapter 7 Future Eternal Destiny
HEAVEN IS THE DESTINATION OF THE RIGHTEOUS
2 Cor. 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. (KJV) . . . As for believers (the righteous), on Judgment Day, sentence that will be passed on all our works AFTER we were saved. Works CANNOT save us (Eph. 2:8-9). The judge is Christ Jesus. ALL judgment is committed to Him (Acts 17:31; John 5:22, 27).
The time of the Judgment Seat of Christ will be right after the Rapture (1 Thes,4:13-18), according to my knowledge. In other words, at the same time that the Great Tribulation is taking place on Earth, the Judgment Seat of Christ will be taking place in the heavens somewhere. The secrets of all hearts will be brought into light (1 Cor. 4:5; Luke 8:17; Luke 12:2-3). http://hisservants.org/judgment_seat_h_s.htm
The destiny of all born again believers (John 1:12; 3:3;8) is Heaven. That was settled the moment you trusted Christ as your Saviour and Lord. What Jesus will judge is everything we did (or didn’t do) for the cause of Christ, AFTER we became God’s child. We will either receive rewards . . . OR lose rewards that we could have had.
John 3:36-A He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: - - - - - . (KJV) . . . Achieving eternal life is NOT difficult, for even a child or retarded person can be born again! Please notice the word “hath” both in this verse and the one to follow. Once we believe God (1 John 5:10-12), and accept Jesus as our Saviour and Lord, we HAVE eternal life, right then! And once we have eternal life, and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we have these blessings for ever (John 14:16; 2 John 1:2). For ever!!
John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. (KJV) . . . Again, that wonderful word: hath! We HAVE everlasting (eternal) life the moment we trust Jesus to save us!
Eternal life is an expression that occurs only once in the Old Testament (Dan.12:2 everlasting life). It appears frequently in the New Testament: eternal life - 26 times; everlasting life - 10 times; and life everlasting - 4 times. It involves the whole future of the redeemed (Luke 16:9), and is completely opposite of eternal punishment. It is the final reward and glory into which ALL the children of God enter into (1 Tim.6:12, 19; Rom.5:21; 6:22; Gal.6:8; 1 Tim.1:16). It is the rest for God’s people (Heb.4:9). The newness of life which the believer obtains from Christ (Rom. 6:4) is the very nature of salvation, and so the eternal life of glory must also be theirs (Rom.5:17,21; 6:8; 8:30; 2 Tim. 2:11-12; Eph.2:5-6). It is our hope (Tit.1:2; 2:3; 3:7); It is a better country (Heb.11:16). It is the “gift of God in Jesus Christ our Lord” (Rom. 6:23; Eph.2:8). The life the faithful have here on earth (John 3:36; 5:24; 6:47, 53-58) is inseparably connected with the eternal life of the future, the happy future of the saints in Heaven.
2 Thes. 1:10 When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day. (KJV) . . . The coming of Christ to the Earth in judgment will justify the believers who have put their trust in Him, and it will at last glorify the Saviour as He so should be.
ETERNAL LIFE
John 14:2-3 A place prepared for us
1 Peter 1:4 An inheritance reserved in Heaven for us
John 20:19, 26 Unlimited by physical properties (1 Cor. 15:35-49)
Rev. 21:4 New emotions
Rev. 21:4 NO more death, crying, sorrow or pain
Rev. ch. 21 Absolute beauty of New Jerusalem
Rev. 21:8, 27 NO more evil of any kind
Rev.22:1-2 The river of life, and the tree of life
The Bible states very little about eternal life in Heaven. I can read chapter 21 of Revelation over and over again, and I simply cannot picture what New Jerusalem will look like. There are just a few brief descriptions of eternity in Heaven, actually more like hints. We are to trust God that He shall provide all that He has promised because He cannot lie (Tit.1:2). I think that one possible reason so little is said about Heaven, is that it is so wonderful we could not comprehend it. And the Lord wants us to keep our eyes on our path here. He has a purpose for our lives on Earth, and He wants us to fulfill that purpose.
HEAVEN
The spiritual meaning of Heaven is: the place of everlasting blessedness of all the righteous ones, the home of the departed spirits of God’s children.
#1. Jesus calls it His Father’s house (John 14:2)
#2. It is called Paradise (Luke 23:43; 2 Cor.12:4; Rev.2:7)
#3. It is called the heavenly Jerusalem (Gal.4:26; Heb.12:22; Rev.3:12)
#4. It is called the Kingdom of Heaven (Mat.25:1; Jam.2:5)
#5. It is called the eternal kingdom (2 Pet.1:11)
#6. It is called the eternal inheritance (1 Pet.1:4; Heb.9:15)
#7. It is called the better country (Heb.11:14,16)
#8. The blessed are said to sit down with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (Mat.8:11)
#9. The blessed are said to be in Abraham’s Bosom (16:22)
#10. The blessed will reign with Christ (2 Tim.2:12; Rev.5:10; 22:5)
#11. It is called rest (Heb.4:10-11)
#12. It is called everlasting life (John 3:15-16)
What is eternal life? It is knowing the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent (John 17:3). IF you insist on working for your salvation (eternal life), there is only ONE way!
John 6:28-29 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? [29] Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. (KJV) . . . THAT is what the Bible clearly states! It is obtained by your faith (believing), and God’s grace (His unmerited favor Eph.2:8-9). Eternal life is a FREE gift from God (John 4:10; Rom.5:15-18; Rom.6:23).
2 Cor. 9:15 Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift. (KJV) . . . The Gift spoken of here is JESUS! We MUST receive the Gift of Jesus, then the gift of eternal life is immediately added unto us.
Scripture says very little about Heaven, but, it says more, a lot more, about Hell. WHY? Because God does NOT want us to go there! There is nothing in the Scriptures to satisfy our curiosity about Hell, but there is enough said to give us a warning. Actually, Christ Himself said more about Hell than anyone else. Hell is an awful reality. Hell is a PLACE! Hell is real! Hell is factual. Believe it! http://www.judgmentcoming.org/j_c_hell_is_it_there.htm
HELL IS THE DESTINATION OF THE WICKED
Hell is ridiculed and mocked today! There are millions who do not think that it exists. But that does not mean it isn’t there! Strange! People think there is a Heaven, but not a Hell.
And there are millions who believe that everyone will go to Heaven. They are WRONG! The Bible states just the opposite . . . that most people will go to Hell.
Matthew 7:13-14 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. (KJV) . . . Beliefs are sometimes only wishful thinking. Friend, you might as well face the FACT that there IS a Hell. Christ is returning to this Earth someday (soon, I think). First He will take His own out of the Earth at the Rapture (1 Thes.4:13-18), and then the Great Tribulation shall begin, and what a horrible time that will be for those who are left.
Matthew 24:21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. (KJV) . . . Do you really see what this is saying? The events of judgment upon the wicked that shall take place during the Great Tribulation will be far worse than any there has ever been, from the beginning of the world to this very day. There has been some horrible things happen in past history, for instance the Jewish Holocaust, but it was minor compared to what is on the way! When the Great Tribulation gets here, there will be nothing to match it; past, present or future. This time will be a terror to the wicked; a judgment upon those who know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Thes.1:8).
I know that it is very unpopular to talk about God’s wrath on sin and wickedness, about judgment that is certain to come, and about the wicked being condemned to Hell. But, it is in the Bible (Mat.12:37; John 3:18,36; Rom.1:18, 2:5; Jam.5:9; 2 Pet.2:4-6). I teach the Bible, and I must teach the “bad” with the “good” (2 Tim.4:2) or I am not obeying my Lord (Mat.28:19). I must bring the Gospel to people, and part of the Gospel is about God’s wrath, judgment and Hell. God’s servants must be diligent, whether the time is favorable or not.
The majority of pastors and teachers today are not willing to confront people with the fact that they are lost, that they are wicked in God’s eyes. Again, who are the lost? Who are the wicked? They are those who: (1.) “know not God” and who (2.) “obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
2 Thes. 1:8-9 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: [9] Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; (KJV) . . . The lost, the wicked, shall be condemned to everlasting destruction in Hell, which means they shall be separated from the Presence of the Lord, from all good and right things and from the glory of God, for ever! Please take special note of the words in 2 Thes.1:8-9. You do NOT have to have this eternal agony in your future. You have a choice: being righteous (saved) by obeying God and going to Heaven OR being wicked (lost) by disobedience to God and going to Hell.
Scriptures represent the final judgment as certain (Ecc. 11:9), universal (2 Cor. 5:10), righteous (Rom.2:5), decisive (1 Cor. 15:52), and eternal as to its consequences (Hebr.6:2).
When Judgment Day comes, there will be NO way for you to avoid your “turn.” You cannot postpone it, cannot say you didn’t know where it was, cannot get your lawyer to stand in for you, cannot run and hide! Both the righteous and the wicked shall face judgment, but not at the same time. This part of this chapter has to do only with the wicked. The Bible considers the wicked to be: unrighteous (Ps.71:4), evil (Ps.140:1), corrupt (Gen.6:11-12), perverse (Deut.32:5), froward (Ps.101:4), immoral (Mat.15:19), an abomination in God’s eyes (Luke 16:14-15). In other words, that Bible claims that anyone without Christ Jesus in their heart and life is wicked, lost, unsaved, does not have eternal life (John 3:18,36; 14:6; Acts 4:12; 1 John 5:12). God’s words, not mine.

ETERNAL PUNISHMENT
2 Thes. 1:8-9 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: [9] Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; (KJV) . . . Destruction is punishment. Non-stop agony.
Rev. 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. (KJV) . . . The Lake of Fire (Hell) was prepared for the devil (Mat.25:41), but all who insist on going his way, shall go there with him! The wicked shall NOT stand before the Judgment Seat of Christ, but instead the Great White Throne (Rev.20:11-15). Not one wicked person shall escape this judgment! The destiny of the wicked has also been pre-decided by God . . . Hell. (Mat.7:23; 25:31-46; Luke 16:22-24; John 3:3,18,36; 5:28-29; 8:24; Rom.6:23).
Hebrews 10:29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? (KJV) . . . This is probably the most solemn, serious and frightening statements in the Word of God. For anyone to act as if the death of Christ is inadequate to settle the sin question, to act as if He had not died for you; is to treat the precious Blood of Christ (1 Pet.1:18-19) as something you can’t stand. If, after you have heard the Gospel, and you turn your back on Jesus, you will be condemned to Hell. This is not what I say; it is what God says. Anyone who does not accept the benefit and blessings bestowed upon us because of Jesus, insults Almighty God who makes the offer to us. IF anyone profanes the Christ (Messiah) whom God has anointed, there is NO other sacrifice for their sins (Heb.6:6; 10:26). Eternal punishment in Hell awaits. God says so!

Believe this!
John 3:36-B . . . and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. (KJV)
John 3:18-B . . . but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. (KJV)
John 8:24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. (KJV)
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (KJV)
Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. (KJV)
1 John 5:12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. (KJV)
CONTRASTING THE RIGHTEOUS WITH THE WICKED, WHICH ARE YOU?
All the following Scripture verses clearly reveal that there are TWO eternal destinations: the righteous go to Heaven, which is eternal life; and the wicked go to Hell, which is eternal punishment.
Matthew 25:46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. (KJV) . . . Everlasting punishment is in Hell! Eternal life is in Heaven! Your choice!
John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. (KJV) . . . When you believe on Him (Jesus) whom God has sent (John 5:29) you are NOT condemned and will go to Heaven. But IF you refuse to believe this, you are already condemned to Hell.
John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. (KJV) . . . IF you believe on Jesus, as your Saviour and Lord, you have eternal life (NOW John 5:24). IF you refuse to believe on Jesus, you have only the wrath of God awaiting you, and that gives you eternity in an agonizing Hell.
John 5:29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. (KJV) . . . Those who rebel against Christ will be resurrected too, but only to hear God’s judgment against them and to be sentenced to eternity apart from His Presence. Millions want to live their way on Earth, ignoring God, disobeying Him, hating Him. These people see death as final. “When you’re dead, you’re dead” is their theory. They think death is rest. How terribly wrong are their beliefs! The Bible does NOT allow unbelieving people to see death as the end of it all. There is a judgment to face, and then there is eternal punishment in the lake of fire! Damnation is condemned, sent to Hell.
Daniel 12:2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. (KJV) . . . This is NOT speaking of soul sleep! The soul does NOT sleep (Luke 16:19-31). It is the body that sleeps after death. The soul/spirit goes back to God who gave it (Ecc.12:7). NO wicked person will ever enter Heaven! And NO righteous person will ever be condemned to Hell. God would NEVER make that mistake.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (KJV) . . . If a person persists on a life of sin and wickedness (a life without Jesus), that person shall one day receive their wages: eternal destruction in Hell which is eternal death. Only the righteous will receive the gift of eternal life in Heaven because they chose to believe God and accept His Way to salvation.
The gift of God is eternal life. You receive that gift by faith. You are saved by faith. You are to live by faith. You are to walk moment by moment by faith. You cannot live for God by yourself any more than you can save yourself. It requires constant dependence upon Him, looking to the Lord Jesus Christ by the power of the Spirit.
SALVATION
ETERNAL LIFE IN HEAVEN
Jesus said “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3:3). What does it mean to be ‘born again’? When we are born physically (of our mother), this is our ‘first birth.’ Your second birth comes the moment you truly accept Jesus as your Saviour. You cannot lie to God!
John 1:12-13 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. (KJV) . . . Jesus has this power! You can be God’s child! But. Jesus said you can’t even “see” Heaven without being ‘born again.’ If we call on the Name of the Lord, we shall be saved. Acts 2:21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. [KJV]
Romans 10:9-10 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. (KJV)
Salvation is available to ALL people.
Salvation (eternal life in Heaven) can be accessed by anyone! It is not something you buy, not something you work for; it is a “gift”! God made salvation so simple that even a young child could understand and accept it; yet the more education a person has, or the older he is, the harder it is to reach him (or her). God loves you! He does not want you to go to Hell; yet if you refuse to accept the “Gift” of His Son, which is eternal life, you most certainly will end up there. Have you received God’s Gift?
If you believe and accept Jesus as your personal Saviour, you can claim ALL the wonderful Promises of God by faith. If you reject Jesus, God promises that He will GIVE to you eternal or second death (Hell). See Matthew 13:49-50; 26:41, 46; John 3:15-18, 36; Romans 6:23; Rev. 20:11-15; 21:8. There IS a Hell! WE NEED TO BE SAVED from it!!!
