Temptation, Chapter 13
Tempt means to test, try, urge; to try to persuade a person; induce; entice; allure, especially in something immoral or sensually pleasurable; to rouse desire in; to lure; to attract.
TEMPTATION IS NOT A SIN; GIVING IN TO IT IS A SIN!
James 1:12Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
Allowing us to be tested is one of God’s methods of developing and strengthening our faith.
2 Peter 2:9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:
Just as God rescued Lot from Sodom before He utterly destroyed it; so too will He rescue His children from the temptations of this wicked world. But notice the last part of the verse; God also knows how to keep records of those who are not His children, and they shall be punished.
2 Peter 2:18For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.
Peter is speaking about false teachers (and those who follow them), here and in the previous verses. Satan has some followers who are brilliant orators, who use beautiful, seductive words. They tempt through sexual immorality and indecency; leading back into sin those who are weak, or new Christians.
2 Peter 2:20For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.
Peter is talking about someone who has learned about Jesus; who have been shown the “Way” to salvation, and then willingly turn away from Him, and go back to their sin and degradation. There are MANY religious people out there. They ‘go to church’ and ‘go through the rituals’. They have a ‘head’ knowledge of Christ, but never really have a ‘heart’ knowledge of Him, or they would never have left! You must POSSESS Christ in your heart BEFORE you PROFESS to be a ‘Christian’. Most people would say they were Christians if asked; but watch how they live. The heartof a person will eventually reveal the TRUE person!Even the devils believein Godand tremble (Jam.2:19). True Christianity is NOT a ‘religion’. It is a Person! It is Christ, and a personal relationship with Him.
Proverbs 14:12There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
The wide road (Mt.7:13-14) seems pleasant, carefree and so welcome. Satan is the ultimate tempter. It offers so many seemingly ‘good’ things, yet requires very few sacrifices. This should make us think twice about all the options that seem so right. This road may offer a life of leisure (laziness); it won’t ask you to change your life-style; immorality is fine; violence, lies, hatred is OK; etc. Jesus says there are “FEW” that find the strait and narrow road that leads to eternal life (Heaven). That wide road maySEEM right but the end result will be eternal death. Do NOT be tempted by easy shortcuts, and that do not require self-sacrifice and hard work. Stay away from that road that SEEMS right, but is NOT right!
Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
The Holy Spirit is a constant, eternal Abider in ALL God’s children. If your desires lead to the Godly qualities listed in Gal.5:22-23, you know the Spirit is guiding you.
Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Here there is no conflict with the law. If these ‘fruits’ are not present (and abundant) in your life, you are not walking in the Spirit, but instead listening to your ‘old’ sinful nature and craving sinful lusts.
James 1:13-14 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: 14But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
God Himself NEVER tests anyone with sin and evil. But, we are not robots; we have a free will and God allows us to make decisions for ourselves. When you do yield to temptation; God is NOT responsible for your decision. Notice: verse 14 states “every man” (or woman) faces temptation! How we handle that temptation is what God is watching. Do we sin? Or do we turn away?
Psalm 141:4 Incline not my heart to any evil thing, to practise wicked works with men that work iniquity: and let me not eat of their dainties.
This prayer should always be on our lips. We should ask God to help us take away our lust and desire for evil things, and not let us want to be around those who do acts of wickedness.
Proverbs 4:14 Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.
God loves us, and does not want us to associate with evil or wicked people, for fear we may become like they are. Stay away from them, avoid the places they go. If you insist on friendship with these people, you will eventually give in to temptation of some kind; and it will only hurt you in the end. God wants only the best for His children; He wants us to walk in right, good, well lighted paths. He does not want us stumbling in the dark, evil paths of the wicked. Light is God. Dark is Satan.
